Darius Rucker closed out the pre-show by performing the national anthem while standing in the ring… Michael Cole opened the main show and was joined on commentary by Wade Barrett. Cole narrated arrival/backstage shots of various wrestlers… A SummerSlam Saturday recap video aired…
Ring announcer Alicia Taylor delivered the introductions for the opening match. Finn Balor made the first entrance. Yes, Cole told the story of Balor winning the championship ten years ago and having to relinquish the title a day later. Sami Zayn made his entrance. Smackdown General Manager Nick Aldis walked out once both wrestlers were inside the ring. Aldis said that he was making an executive decision to add a participant. Gunther made his entrance while Zayn threw a fight inside the ring. Gunther stopped and shook hands with Aldis before heading to the ring. Just as the match was about to start, Aldis said he actually made it a Fatal Four-Way. Kevin Owens’ entrance theme played. Zayn’s jaw dropped as his longtime friend and rival made his entrance to a big ovation. Very cool moment…
- Kevin Owens vs. Gunther vs. Sami Zayn vs. Finn Balor in a four-way to become No. 1 contender to the WWE Championship. Owens looked emotional before he entered the ring. Cole said no one thought Owens would wrestle again after his neck surgery. The bell rang, and Owens went right after Gunther. Zayn stood in a corner of the ring with his jaw dropped as Owens performed cannonballs on Gunther and Balor in opposite corners. Owens stood in the middle of the ring. Zayn walked toward him. Owens and Zayn hugged and then traded punches. Moments later, Owens performed a top rope Swanton onto all three opponents on the floor. Back in the ring, Gunther worked over Zayn with knees to the gut and a big chop. Gunther played to the crowd and soaked up the boos.
Later, Balor had Zayn down when he went up top, but Owens pushed him off the top rope. Owens went for a Swanton on Zayn, who put his knees up. Owens came up holding his neck. The referee held Zayn back. Zayn went to a corner of the ring before running toward Owens for a Heluva Kick, but Gunther caught him in a sleeper and took him down to the mat. Balor performed a Coup de Grace onto Zayn to break up Gunther’s sleeper before covering Zayn for a near fall. Owens hit Stunners on Balor and Gunther. He kicked Zayn and went for a Stunner, but Zayn countered with a Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Zayn set up for a Helluva Kick, but Owens beat him to the punch with a superkick. Owens kicked Zayn and put him down with a Stunner before covering him for the three count.
Kevin Owens defeated Sami Zayn, Gunther, and Finn Balor in 8:30 in a four-way to become the No. 1 contender to the WWE Championship. Powell’s POV: That was an outstanding way to open the show. Aldis adding Gunther a night after facing him in a match was fun, but Owens returning and winning was awesome. By the way, WrestleTix listed the venue as being set up for 34,080, with 33,086 tickets distributed (35,759 were distributed for night one). The peak capacity for U.S. Bank Stadium is 73,000. SummerSlam Sunday 2025 was held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and 58,186 tickets were distributed.
The cast of Super Troopers 3 was shown in the crowd slamming beers while Cole plugged the movie before a trailer aired…
U.S. Champion Trick Williams and Baron Corbin were shown warming up backstage heading into a batch of ads…
The entrances for the U.S. Title match took place after the break with Corbin entering first. Lil Yachty stood on the stage and introduced Trick Williams, who stood on a platform that slowly spun around once before he walked off and headed toward the ring with Yachty. Trick stopped halfway, looked back at a camera, and winked before finishing his entrance…
- Trick Williams (w/Lil Yachty) vs. Baron Corbin for the U.S. Championship. Trick hit Corbin, and the referee rewarded him for it by calling for the opening bell. Trick clotheslined Corbin over the top rope and then followed him to the floor, where he ran him into the barricade. Trick pulled a sponsored table out from underneath the ring and set it up on the floor while Corbin returned to the ring. Trick followed Corbin back inside the ring, but Corbin ducked out the other side. Trick followed and charged Corbin, who put him down with a Deep Six on the floor. Corbin roughed up Trick on the floor and then worked him over with punches and elbows once he was back in the ring. Corbin went after Trick’s eye before dumping him to the floor. Corbin followed him, but Yachty got in his face. Corbin shoved Yachty down, but Yachty grabbed his white kendo stick, causing Corbin to return to the ring, where Trick was waiting.
Trick performed a neckbreaker, a couple of kicks, and a Bookend for a two count. Trick picked up Corbin on his shoulders, but Corbin raked his eyes while the referee was shielded. Corbin tried to run the ropes. Yachty hit Corbin with a kendo stick from the floor, which the referee also missed. Trick performed a Death Valley Driver-style move for a near fall. Late in the match, Corbin grabbed the U.S. Title belt. Yachty confronted him. Trick punched Corbin, who collided with Yachty, who fell from the apron and through the table on the floor. Corbin picked up the title belt and hit a distracted Trick while the referee was focused on Yachty. Corbin followed up with End of Days and got the three count…
Baron Corbin defeated Trick Williams in 9:05 to win the U.S. Championship. Powell’s POV: That’s the first big upset of the weekend. Does Corbin shave the furry title belt to make it a bald belt? Anyway, the match was fine, but they really made the referee look like an idiot for missing so many things.
Cole said Rhea Ripley is out indefinitely with an injury. He said they would crown an interim WWE Women’s Champion in a ladder match after a break…
Cole and Barrett checked in from their broadcast table and introduced the Spanish broadcast team of Marcelo Rodriguez and Jerry Soto, who spoke briefly in Spanish. They showed SummerSlam viewing parties being held in multiple countries…
Women’s U.S. Champion Tiffany Stratton made the first entrance. She received a nice ovation, but it was nothing all that special considering the show was in her home state. Cole noted that Stratton was wearing Minnesota Vikings colors (I knew she looked even better than usual today!). Jade Cargill made her entrance with gear that paid homage to Prince in the late musician’s home state. Chelsea Green received a nice pop for her entrance. Lash Legend had a standard entrance. Charlotte Flair was the last woman out. Flair wore a wild robe and had pyro. Cole stated during the match that Flair’s gear was a tribute to a late superfan named Scarlett, who recently lost a cancer battle. Cole also said Scarlett’s family was in attendance…
- Tiffany Stratton vs. Jade Cargill vs. Chelsea Green vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Lash Legend in a five-way ladder match to become the Interim WWE Women’s Champion. Jade met Flair on the floor, and they fought, so the referee called for the opening bell. They had a bunch of ladders set up at ringside. Legend tossed Stratton and Green into chairs. Stratton immediately grabbed the back of her head. Legend dumped Green over the barricade. Stratton seemed fine when she returned to the ring and worked with Green as they worked over Jade and Legend, who eventually put them down with stereo pump kicks.
Jade cleared Lash from the ring with a German suplex. Flair hit Jade with a top rope crossbody block. Flair picked up a ladder and jabbed Jade with it, causing Jade to tumble through the ropes to the floor. Flair placed the ladder over the middle rope in a corner of the ring. Legend dumped Flair to the floor. Legend set up a ladder underneath the title belt that was hanging above. Stratton jumped from the ropes and hit Legend with a Codebreaker. Stratton played to the crowd while Flair returned to the ring. They traded forearms or elbows in the middle of the ring. Flair dumped Stratton on the ladder that was draped over the middle rope. Green returned and ended up being alone in the ring. She made a play for the belt, but Jade returned to the ring and pulled her off the ladder and then performed a clunky-looking Jaded onto the ladder over the middle rope.
A short time later, Stratton and Legend were on the ropes with a ladder draped over the middle rope. Stratton apparently went for a huracanrana, but Legend powerbombed her onto the ladder. Flair made a play for the belt and ended up hanging from it when Jade pulled the ladder away. Jade and Legend pulled Flair down. Jade swung Flair into Jade and then slammed Flair into a ladder leaning in a corner of the ring. Moments later, Legend set up Stratton for another powerbomb, but this time Stratton performed a hurcanrana that sent her into a ladder. Stratton climbed the ladder and was off the side of the title belt. Green entered the ring and tipped over the ladder, sending Stratton from high on the ladder onto three opponents below.
B-Fab and Michin ran out and stopped Green from pulling the belt down. Green’s feet were hooked on a rung of the ladder, so B-Fab and Michin worked her over while she was upside down. Cole noted that there are no disqualifications in ladder matches. Jade returned to the ring. B-Fab and Michin tried to help Jade climb a ladder. Flair returned to the ring and took out Jade’s sidekicks. Flair eventually joined Jade on one of the ladders in the middle of the ring. Stratton and Lash joined them on the ladders, but they were quickly knocked down. Flair and Jade took an odd simultaneous bump off the ladder. Chelsea, who was still upside down with her feet in a ladder run, sat up. Green climbed the ladder and pulled the belt down to win the championship.
Chelsea Green defeated Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, Lash Legend, and Tiffany Stratton in a ladder match in 13:05 to become the Interim WWE Women’s Champion. The announcers recapped highlights from the match. Green stood near the top of the ladder and held up her title belt while pyro shot off. Cole indicated that the Human Monies on a Pole match was up next, and then a batch of ads were shown…
Powell’s POV: Take that, Michael Hayes. Okay, so I’m sure he’s as happy as anyone for her despite his comments on WWE Unreal that made her out to be a role player who would never hold a world title. The live crowd popped big for Green’s win. I love it. She’s fun and has won over the fans in a major way. It will be interesting to see how Stratton responds to Green pushing her ladder over, which was the most insane bump of the match. Fortunately, Jade, Flair, and Legend did a good job of bracing Stratton’s fall on the floor. SummerSlam Sunday has exceeded expectations thus far.

Dominik Mysterio made his entrance. A white bag with a $ symbol was hanging on the pole. “Nice job on the bag, guys,” Cole quipped. Danhausen drove his little car onto the stage. He went to ringside, where he gave his cape to a young fan in the front row…
- Danhausen vs. Dominik Mysterio in a “Human Monies on a Pole” match. Dom hit Danhausen with a forearm and went right for the money bag that supposedly contains $10,000, but Danhausen cut him off. JD McDonagh ran out at the 2:20 mark to stop Danhausen from grabbing the money bag. Cole said there was nothing the referee could do per the match rules.
Three Minihausens attacked McDonagh, which drew cheers from fans. A fourth Minihausen showed up. Cole said it was “Toritohausen.” Barrett said it rang a bell. One of the Minihausens jumped from the top rope and performed a huracanrana that sent Dom to the floor. The Minihausen dove onto Dom. Danahusen made a play for the money bag, but McDonagh cut him off. Joe Hendry made his entrance with a guitar. McDonagh ran up the ramp to meet Hendry, who roughed him up and slammed the guitar over his back. Hendry stood at ringside and watched while Dom crotched Danhausen over the top rope. Dom went for the money, but Dom cursed him. Some pyro shot off from the ring post, causing Dom to fall off the ropes. Danhausen pulled the money bag down to win the match.
Danhausen defeated Dominik Mysterio in a “Human Monies on a Pole” match in 6:50. After the match, Danhausen threw money into the crowd. He stopped at the broadcast table and let Cole and Barrett each grab a bill. Barrett complained that he got $1, while Cole acted giddy after pulling a Danhausen Dollar…
Cole set up a clip that had Vic Joseph and Booker T calling the show on WWE Radio. A batch of ads followed…
Powell’s POV: This didn’t do anything for me, but the live crowd, particularly the kids, clearly enjoyed it. I can’t even imagine paying to hear Booker T’s radio call. Anyway, my buddy Hater Dave is at the show. He just wrote to say that Joe Hendry had a huge pop, and he added that the pop for Chelsea Green’s win was even louder than when Randy Orton showed up the night before.
The Killer Bees Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell were shown in the crowd. They wore their masks and then removed them. Rick Martel was also shown next to the Bees. Molly Holly and Brunzell’s former AWA tag team partner Greg Gagne were also shown. Molly held up a sign saying she loves Minnesota (she’s a local)…
Chad Gable made his entrance to his cornball entrance theme. The biggest pop was when he was introduced as being from Minneapolis. Gable stopped and had a moment with his wife and kids. Cole said Gable told him that his parents, his in-laws, and other relatives were in attendance. Cole noted that Gable was wearing Minnesota Vikings colors (I knew he looked better than usual today). Penta made his entrance. A graphic noted that he’d been champion for 153 days. Penta had his usual in-ring pyro…
- Penta vs. Chad Gable for the Intercontinental Title. Cole ran through a list of some of the top Intercontinental Title matches held at SummerSlam events over the years. Gable offered a handshake, but Penta accepted. Gable tried to walk away, but Penta held his hand and then spoke to him for a moment. Gable performed some German Suplexes and bridged while getting an early near fall. Gable grabbed Penta from behind, but Penta pulled him into the corner and ducked, causing Gable’s shoulder to hit the top turnbuckle pad. Gable sold shoulder pain while Cole said he came into the match with a left shoulder injury. Penta kicked Gable while he was talking to the referee. Gable stuffed a backstabber and then knocked Penta down. Gable went for a moonsault, but Penta superkicked him on the way down. Gable rolled Penta into an ankle lock, but Penta rolled over, sending Gable over the top rope to the floor. Penta hit Gable with a tope con hilo. Gable came up selling his shoulder. Back in the ring, Penta hit a Penta Driver for a near fall.
A short time later, Gable had Penta down when he went for a top rope dive, but Penta caught him in a hold that wrenched Gable’s bad shoulder. Penta threw kicks at Gable. Penta said he was sorry before throwing another kick. Barrett said Penta knew Gable would do the same if the situation were reversed. Gable rolled Penta into an ankle lock that he rolled out of. Gable applied an armbar over the ropes and had to release it. Gable performed a German suplex on the ring apron, causing Penta to fall to the floor. Gable performed a top rope moonsault onto Penta and then threw him back inside the ring. Gable performed a top rope headbutt. He covered Penta while also selling his shoulder injury, allowing Penta to kick out. Gable went to the middle rope while he had Penta seated on the top turnbuckle. Penta sent Gable to the apron and hit him with a Mexican Destroyer on the apron. Penta got Gable back inside the ring and covered him for a near fall. Penta set up for another Mexican Destroyer, but Gable took him down and applied the ankle lock. When Penta made a play for the ropes, Gable pulled him back to the middle of the ring and then dropped down to the mat while maintaining the hold. Penta tapped.
Chad Gable defeated Penta in 11:10 to win the Intercontinental Championship. Gable cried as he sat in a corner of the ring while holding the title belt. Gable had some blood on his cheek. There was replay footage of Gable’s wife and kids cheering when he won the match. Penta pulled Gable to his feet and put the belt around his waist. Gable continued to cry. Penta raised Gable’s hand, and they hugged. Penta raised Gable’s hand one more time before leaving the ring. Gable’s wife and kids entered the ring, along with his parents. Gable’s son wore the same gear as his father. Cute. A “you deserve it” chant broke out. Gable got a mic and said, “My name is Chad Gable, and I was born, raised, and I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota.” Gable said his family stood by him through his highs and lows, all the way to this moment when he can finally say he’s the Intercontinental Champion. Gable held up the title belt while pyro shot off on the stage. Cole asked how you could not love this. He said Gable is the epitome of never say die and never give up. A root beer company’s mascot got on the apron and handed Gable two cans of his product, which
